Hello Mission Hill Families! My name is Derek Kendall, and I am the Principal of Mission Hill Middle School. I have 18 years of experience as an educator, serving as a 7th and 8th grade science and English teacher, middle school counselor, and most recently an Assistant Principal at Soquel High. I am honored to be a Maverick, and bring my skills and leadership to the Mission Hill community. I am passionate about equity; I want every student at MHMS to feel connected and valued, and to have access to the resources needed to be successful in school and in life. I truly believe strong public schools are the foundation of a democratic society. I am grateful to live and work in Santa Cruz, and educate and support Mission Hill students.

My name is Sara Norris, and I’m delighted to introduce myself to you as Assistant Principal at Mission Hill Middle School. I have been an educator since 1996 and bring my experience as a district literacy coordinator, STEM museum director, TK-8 instructional coach, and elementary classroom teacher to my new role at MHMS. My work with both children and adults is driven by a deep conviction that every person deserves to learn and grow in a caring and equity-focused community that values who they are. Engaging collaboratively with colleagues and families, I will advocate for all students to ensure that Mission Hill is a place where every child will experience joy and challenge while developing their intellectual curiosity, creativity, critical thinking skills, and caring, healthy relationships.

Mi nombre es Sara Norris y estoy encantada de presentarme a ustedes como su Subdirectora en la Escuela Secundaria Mission Hill. My name is Amrik Nijor, as the School Administrative Assistant, I am here to help you with any questions or concerns you may have or guide you in the right direction. I am your resource, so please feel free to reach out to me as needed. I am also here for the students to help them with any questions or concerns they may have throughout their school day. I have a background in Social Work and Education and enjoy working with young adults. I believe in providing students with an environment that encourages learning, personal growth and fulfillment. My name is Gail Marzolf and I am the Attendance Technician for Mission Hill. My job is to accurately record student attendance each day of school. If your student is absent from school please let me know by calling the attendance phone line or by sending me an email. You can also come see me in the front office. This is a new role for me and I am excited to be part of the Maverick community. I have a professional background in science, and I was an active parent volunteer in my daughter’s schools over the past 15 years. I enjoy the positive energy of Mission Hill and I look forward to serving as your attendance technician.

Hello Mission Hill!
I am the mental health specialist (social emotional counselor) here at Mission Hill. I am a licensed therapist (LCSW) and provide counseling services to our students when they are referred to me by staff or parents. I also provide drop in support to all students as needed. Previously I worked at Encompass Youth Services where I provided therapy to families and children in our community, and I also have previous experience working various school settings serving students and families. I have been working with children and families for over 20 years and have a passion for connecting with each child I meet using creative and client centered approaches. I believe every single child deserves to feel included and successful here at Mission Hill and I am here to support them in building the skills they need to navigate middle school and beyond!

I have been in education for the past 18 years. I have a degree in Early Childhood Education, and a Master Teacher Certificate from the State of California. I am passionate about helping children navigate the developmental stages in a kind and compassionate environment. I spent the first 15 years of my career as a Pre-K teacher, and have many wonderful memories. I worked for 3 years at Santa Cruz High School in the Health Office, until my recent move to Mission Hill Middle School. I look forward to getting to know the Mission Hill Middle School Community.
